Toy Story

* * * 1/2*

Computer generated cartoon fun! In the first full length computer animated motion picture, Disney presents a world where toys come to life when their owners are away. The particular cadre Toy Story focuses on belong to Andy, and is led by Andy's favorite toy, a talking cowboy doll, Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks). When Andy receives a gadget-packed Buzz Lightyear action figure (voiced by Tim Allen) on his birthday, the toyroom order is sent into upheaval. Buzz doesn't think he is a toy, and rules the playroom with the authority of a representative from Star Command. Woody is naturally jealous, and his schemes to put Buzz in his place send both of them out of the secure playroom and into the real world. Not only is the imagery and detail of the animation breathtaking, but there are plenty of gems of wit scattered throughout the film. The voice casting is extraordinary (in addition to Hanks and Allen, the talents of Don Rickles, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Jim Varney, and Annie Potts are used). The only real negative about this film are the trio of bland and time wasting songs by Randy Newman. Not only were they forgettable, but they distracted from the fun tone of the movie.
