Beavis and Butthead Do America is a misguided adaptation of the MTV cartoon
that abandons two important ingredients: the music video critiques, and
the refreshingly short length. The story begins as Beavis and Butthead's
beloved television set is stolen. When the dimwitted duo stumble their
way into a hotel promising free TV, they are mistaken for hit men and sent
to Las Vegas. From Vegas, through a series of further misunderstandings,
the pair bumble their way across America, defiling landmarks as they go.
In the transition from the small screen to the big screen, only a few things
have changed. The animation quality is still low-grade even by television
standards. Gone are the entertaining music video segments where Beavis and
Butthead brainlessly pick apart snips of popular culture. Instead, Beavis
and Butthead Do America provides a couple of music videos of its own, which
are crude, vapid and uninteresting. Too bad Beavis and Butthead aren't around
to criticize themselves. Anyway, the movie doesn't have enough material or
creativity to fill its entire 80 minutes. As a result, they stoop to
repetition, making those the longest 80 minutes spent in a movie theater.
There are a few amusing moments in the film, but they come early and are
fleeting. Die hard fans of the show won't be discouraged by any poor review, and in
all probability have already seen it. Others should heed the advice of
Butthead himself: "This sucks more than anything has ever sucked before!"
