03/29/99 11:27 PMWord from the ShoWest convention of theater owners is that the release date is going to be moved up earlier than the reported July 16 date. The unexpected passing of director Stanley Kubrick will have no effect. The only hitch is that Tom Cruise demands that no changes can be done to the 98% complete film without his personal approval.

03/29/99 11:42 PMI know it looks like a raunchy site, but this fan website does have links to that exclusive teaser trailer of "Eyes Wide Shut" shown at the ShoWest convention to theater owners. The three minute clip is first footage to be released publicly on the highly secretive film. The site's address is www.untouchable.net/~yak/sable/ews.html. The trailer is downloadable in two versions, a 3.2 meg and a 6.3 meg version.

Critical (anonymous)huh?
07/20/99 04:12 PMNicole Kidman is "misused" because she is only a motivator for Cruise? Is there some logical step here the reviewer has forgotten to insert? Why is it a mistake to make a celebrity something other than pivotal? And the "exposition" at the end introduces doubt, it doesn't resolve it. At least one thing the person in question "reveals" is clearly false, if you've compared two certain naked bodies (won't go into details, to avoid a spoiler). Nothing is resolved.

07/26/99 04:56 AMI have just seen the film "EWS". It's a masterpiece. I was
shocked, moved to tears and speechless after the movie was
over. I HAVE to see this movie again. I am obsessed with
it. I guarantee it will be nominated for the Oscars. I was
never bored for a secon

07/31/99 11:38 PMNothing pleases everyone. Kubrick has filmed a masterpiece in its own right, but let's face it, there will never be another "2001". But Eyes Wide Shut is nevertheless to "erotic thrillers" what "2001" is to SF movies. Without a drop of blood, Kubrick terrifies you; the party Cruise crashes is any director's study in true horror. If you're expecting Kubrick to be reviewable like other directors, you're unaware he's in a league of his own, and YOU will cause his work to suffer. In any film by Kubrick, you must participate. His death leaves the playing field that much smaller.

08/01/99 02:08 AMThere is much to admire RE: Kubrick's past work most notably Dr. Stranglove and A Clockwork Orange. Eyes Wide Shut comes up empty. The weak link seems to but not such much in the performances of the two stars but in the narrative.

This final work can perhaps be admired for unrealized but
interesting possibilities.

08/04/99 09:54 PMIThe sex in Eyes Wide Shut is almost entirely still life. Most of the film relates to Cruise having to deal with having his eyes opened for him - by his wife and by the various events and people he meets on his trip down fantasy lane, he cannot distinguish reality from fantasy, or deal at all with the huge blow to his ego Kidman delivers by talking about her sexual fantasy. It is not by accident that Kubrick chooses a doctor to have his ego blown apart.

The three hours flew by, the film leaves one thimkimg ,first about the movie and then about themselves. Go see it.

08/08/99 01:41 PM Okay. Who really understood and fully appreciated 2001 when they first saw it? Let's see a show of hands.
Eyes Wide Shut tantalized me completely but I would hate to have to churn out a review that claimed understanding, even a month after seeing it. Kubrick's finest work always contains a labyrinth of complexity, the end of which seems to recede infinitely. Eyes is no exception. There is no lack of emotional impact in this film, and as for the the sex not being sexy... um... hello...
THIS IS A KUBRICK FILM! Anyone expecting to see the steamy (positive?) sexuality suggested by the trailers probably hadn't compared the role of sexuality in his other films (let alone the role of women) and was perhaps waiting to be an active participant in the goings-on in the film. If the dissatisfied viewer felt abandoned by the film or, what is worse, excluded, then perhaps they were merely a voyuer in the first place, who didn't belong.
Mikey_Wetzel@hotmail.com (anonymous)You missed the whole movie
10/15/99 05:49 PMI'm convinced that Nicole Kidman's character was at the orgy. Think long and hard about it and you will agree...and then you will realize that your eyes were wide shut. Stanley Kubrick does not make movies for people who are unwilling to keep their brain on during and after the movie. (Unlike Sixth Sense, which had a shocker ending, but blew it by explaining it 6 times over to every last moron in the theatre.)

03/14/00 07:39 PMWell perhaps it's because I have few experiences
with Kubrick films, in fact other than this movie,
I have one (and that is "The Shining," which I
have seen once and frankly didn't care for at all).
But this movie, "Eyes Wide Shut" really kept my
attention. No, it wasn't perfect, but still good
enough as a movie. A lot of critics compare
movies from established directors to his or her
classic movies, so for once not being too
familiar with his films is a plus. Perhaps in a
few years, when I'm older, I will see "2001" or
"Doctor Strangelove" and finally understand why
this movie may not have been a good note for such
a great director to end on, but until then it's
the best Kubrick movie I've seen...
