Celtic Pride - * 1/2*

Celtic Pride is a rather flimsy comedy centering on the antics of two fanatic basketball fans. Dan Aykroyd and Daniel Stern play the loyal, superstitious fans of the Boston Celtics. When their team makes the playoffs, they are ecstatic; when NBA powerhouse Lewis Scott (Damon Wayans) leads the Utah Jazz to crush the Celtics in the first games of the series, the pair get maniacally depressed. So depressed, in fact, that when they discover Scott at a local bar, the two decide to kidnap him until the series is over. The film starts out shakily, focusing on the fans’ pitiful lives. Once the plot takes off, there is some true potential. When Lewis Scott starts playing mind games with his captors, the film get pretty funny. Yet, it fouls out in the third act, blundering back to The Boston Garden, and a boring, humorless final stretch. Aykroyd and Stern have a couple of good scenes in their freaked-out fandom, but the schtick gets old fast. Unfortunately, the few sparks of comedy in this film never quite catch flame.
