Sense and Sensibility - * * * 1/2*

Wonderful adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay, and stars as Elinor Dashwood, the eldest of three sisters, and the embodiement of sense and prudence. Kate Winslet plays her younger sister, Marianne, who is full of passion and romantic sensibilities. At the outset of the film, Elinor falls in love with the shy Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant), who may or may not be eligible to receive her affections. Marianne, however, has a torrid romance with the dashing, and shallow, John Willoughby. When their loves may be in jeopardy, the sisters react appropriately, with Marianne sinking into illness and despair, while Elinor relies on hope and patience. Emma Thompson deserves thorough congratulations for this one, both for her acting, and a delightful screenplay, full of wit and charm. There are plenty of comical moments and situations, and witty one-liners abound. The direction by Ang Lee is well done; a movie which could have been slow and dull, is instead bright and vibrant. The beautiful scenery helps as well. All in all, this is a delightful movie.
