Carrington - * * 1/2*

A turbulent film about a lifelong love affair between the painter Dora Carrington (Emma Thompson), and the homosexual author Lytton Strachey (Jonathan Pryce). When Carrington (as she prefers to be called) meets Lytton for the first time, she deems him disgusting. However the impulsive Strachey is fascinated and infatuated by her, and eventually wins her liking and ultimately her love. The movie spans nearly thirty years, in which Carrington moves in and out of relationships and marriage with other men. Yet it is her lifelong yearning for Strachey that lingers throughout, while the other men come and go. Thompson and Pryce deliver the outstanding performances that they are known for, particularly Pryce who enlivens Strachey with unique mannerisms. The pacing of the film is a bit sedate, involving rather flat, but unique, characters. It never resolves into the enlightened involving drama it strives to be, but rather remains a different but detached film.
