My Family - * * 1/2*

Enjoyable multigenerational family saga. Edward James Olmos narrates the story, which starts in the 1920s when his father begins his journey, walking from a remote Mexican village to Los Angeles. The saga continues, detailing the lives of the parents in the 20s and 30s. It flashes forward to the parents of many children, including a troubled teen (Esai Morales). And the story concludes in the 80s, where the adult children (including Olmos and Jimmy Smits) have troubles of their own. My Family has several warm and humorous moments. However, it tends toward the melodramatic and predictable (especially in the 1950s segment). The acting is well done throughout, making all the characters believable and mostly sympathetic. Overall a good, if a bit obvious, family portrait.
